Mamertine in ancient times, the fabled Roman cistern-turned-prison where, according to legend, St Peter himself was imprisoned. Now, Mamertine is an entire planet, the product of a failed terraforming effort, devoted to permanently housing the worst of the worst, those criminals judged by society as Irredeemable.

Mamertine an entire planet of desperate criminals, a wasteland buffeted by superstorms and possessing only the barest essentials of human life. Utterly inescapable, being sent there is a death sentence.

Mamertine where my son has been sent, having been framed for murder and convicted by judge and jury as Irredeemable.

And where I must now go, having made a deal with the devil incarnate himself to give me a very literal new lease on life. With a new body and an insane plan, I have the chance to finally, for once in my life, put things right.

And Heaven help anyone who stands in my way.

Mamertine edition by Joseph Eckert Literature Fiction eBooks

From the first page, the author draws you into a father's thrilling and intense search for his son. In parallel, you are led through scenes from the protagonist's past, developing his depth as a character as the story itself races on. In setting the story (mostly) on a prison planet of people deemed (fairly or unfairly, it's for the reader to decide) Irredeemable, exiled from society to live out their lives in an incomprehensible wasteland, the author gradually leads the reader to think about the idea of forgiveness - something the protagonist struggles to grant himself. I don't want to ramble on, but I think something needs to be said for such entertaining novels that also provide a good deal of substance. I used to sit in the library in high school reading through its classic science fiction collection (Bradbury, Clarke, Heinlein, Asimov) at my free periods. All of these novelists wrote stories that were engaging, but also got me thinking. In writing about adventures and stories in fantastical times, these authors used their settings as a means to examine something greater about their own time. I've since read through plenty of more modern stuff, and I can say that Mamertine evoked this feeling, and got me thinking beyond the story itself in a way that no book has since my days in the old library. If I ramble any further, I'm afraid I may give out spoilers. I recommend this book fully - it's fast-paced, it's thrilling, it will make you think, and you won't put it down until you hit the back cover! I look forward to reading Mr. Eckert's next novel!
